Heatsink in 3D Printing

02, Jun, 2016

Heat dissipation is one of the most important point of consideration while designing a hardware.

In 3D Printing, heating is referred to several sections. And in this case, heat dissipation is one of the problem faced during printing.

First, the stepextruder and hotend. Cartridge heater is widely used to heat the hotend to melt the printing material ABS, PLA, POM and so on. How to cool the hotend is vital to avoid overheating. The all metal hotend which is fantastic with a round horizontal aluminum heatsink.

Coming to the stepextruder, you may see the very classic Makerbot MK7 Stepextruder and new Bulldog Extruder. Step motor, chasis, drive gear, heatsink, dc fan. The cooling fan and the heat sink are for cooling the step motor.A knowledge of step motor that the higher speed it runs, the less the torque output, the longer time it runs, over heating would cause less torque and losing step. You will find the stepextruder is Not working correctly as it was after a long run. This is the second problem we are facing, to cool the step motor. Not only the stepextruder but also other 2, 3 or 4 steppers in your 3d printer.

Thirdly, electronics like Mega 2560, Ramps 1.4 Board, stepper drivers, even the heatbed, we need to consider to “heatsink” them during running.

heatsink family

Heatsink was widely used in computers, personal electronic board AVR, ARM etc.
